In automotive finishing, the polishing stage is where hours of preparation can be undone in seconds. Using the wrong cloth — one that’s too abrasive, leaves lint, or holds contamination — can introduce swirl marks, scratches, or residue into a freshly prepared surface.
What to look for in a car polishing cloth
A good automotive polishing cloth needs to meet several criteria simultaneously:
- Lint-free: Any loose fibres left on a painted surface create problems during the next stage of finishing, and can trap under clear coats if the vehicle is going back through a paint process.
- Consistent absorbency: For applying and removing polish compounds, even absorption ensures the product works as intended across the whole surface.
- Non-abrasive weave: The knit structure of the cloth must be fine enough not to introduce micro-scratches, especially on softer modern paint systems.
Appletex car polishing cloths are manufactured from carefully selected cotton yarns, knitted to a specification developed in collaboration with automotive finishing professionals.
Industrial vs. detailing use
There’s a meaningful difference between cloths used in automotive manufacturing — where robot covers, engineering wipes, and filtration applications also come into play — and those used in professional or enthusiast detailing. We supply both sectors, and the specifications differ. Getting the right product for the right application is something our team can help with directly.
